Why should I do yoga instead of many other methods of improving health such as Pilates, going to the gym or physical therapy?
Yoga is a philosophy from which a system of physical exercise emerged. In my experience, the foundation of that philosophy allows yoga to help one achieve the right balance between body, breath and awareness. Yet balance is not static, so it is not really something one can fully achieve. It is more a state of being. That is why yoga is always referred to as a practice. The practice of yoga is making a long-term investment in and commitment to oneself in moving ever towards that balance. I do not see a need to make an exclusive choice. If you have the practice of yoga, there is no conflict in including other forms. I am well known for my cross-training.
Can I hurt myself with yoga?
Yoga is not dangerous, however, the improper practice of yoga can produce injury. Any activity that involves stretching or strengthening can produce injury if done too aggressively or without proper technique. This is why one should always begin yoga or any other activity with competent instruction.
Can you recommend postures to help my lower back?
Postures do not relieve pain, it is how a person works in a posture that produces the right result. Doing a beneficial posture improperly may be worse than doing nothing. Therefore, I do not recommend postures until one understands how to use the posture properly.
I am not flexible at all. Can I do yoga?
I still consider myself to be one of the stiffest people ever when I started doing yoga almost 20 years ago. Excessive stiffness can lead to a variety of health problems. Not only can stiff people do yoga, but yoga is the best path I know to enhance flexibility. There is virtually no one who cannot practice yoga. No matter how inflexible we are, yoga helps us gain more freedom of movement each day.
I am already fairly flexible. Why do I need Yoga?
Flexibility is a result of yoga that we often notice, but it is only one of many results and, often, not even the most important. Yoga helps us gain a balance of strength, flexibility and awareness. Yoga is as much about strength and mental awareness as it is about flexibility. Problems come when we are out of balance. Yoga helps us achieve the balance that each one of us needs.
Why is the cost of a private session a good investment as opposed to attending classes?
Every person is unique. No one is quite like anyone else. That means the yoga I need is going to be different from yoga someone else might need. By working in one-on-one sessions, we are better able to realize that particular yoga that is right for us. After only one or two privates, you will know which venue will work best for you and understand why
Dislaimer: I do not have medical training. I do not diagnose conditions nor do I claim to correct or cure any condition. If you are experiencing pain of any severity or any other evidence of a medical condition, you must have a medical evaluation before working with me. Experience has shown that when people become more flexible and stronger, attain better posture and learn to move correctly, they feel better. Since Yoga improves all four of these areas, people generally feel better after they have engaged the practice of yoga.
